About Temperature Units
Temperature is a physical quantity that expresses hot and cold. It is measured with a thermometer calibrated in one or more temperature scales.
Celsius (°C)
The Celsius scale, also known as the centigrade scale, is a temperature scale used by the International System of Units (SI). It is defined so that 0°C is the freezing point of water and 100°C is the boiling point of water at standard atmospheric pressure.
Fahrenheit (°F)
The Fahrenheit scale is a temperature scale based on one proposed in 1724 by the physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit. On the Fahrenheit scale, the freezing point of water is 32°F and the boiling point is 212°F at standard atmospheric pressure.
Kelvin (K)
The Kelvin scale is an absolute temperature scale used in scientific work. Zero on the Kelvin scale is absolute zero, the theoretical point at which all thermal motion ceases. The Kelvin scale is used extensively in scientific work because a number of physical quantities, such as the volume of an ideal gas, are directly related to absolute temperature.
Rankine (°R)
The Rankine scale is an absolute temperature scale named after the Scottish engineer and physicist William John Macquorn Rankine, who proposed it in 1859. The symbol is °R. Zero on the Rankine scale is absolute zero, and a temperature difference of 1°R is equal to a temperature difference of 1°F.
Conversion Formulas
- Celsius to Fahrenheit: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
- Fahrenheit to Celsius: °C = (°F - 32) × 5/9
- Celsius to Kelvin: K = °C + 273.15
- Kelvin to Celsius: °C = K - 273.15
- Fahrenheit to Kelvin: K = (°F + 459.67) × 5/9
- Kelvin to Fahrenheit: °F = (K × 9/5) - 459.67
- Fahrenheit to Rankine: °R = °F + 459.67
- Rankine to Fahrenheit: °F = °R - 459.67
- Kelvin to Rankine: °R = K × 9/5
- Rankine to Kelvin: K = °R × 5/9
